Read a Romance Month

February may do its best to take top-billing when it comes to romance, but that doesn't mean other months should be discounted.  August, for example, has Romance Awareness Day on the 14th and is Romance Awareness Month. There is also, Couple's Day on the 18th, National Kiss and Make-Up Day on the 25th, and National Matchmaker Day on the 31st.  Most importantly though, it's Read a Romance Month!

Perfect time to go looking for love in all the sub-genres.

With 2 million followers on Instagram, 904K followers on Facebook, and 1.4 million on TikTok, Colleen Hoover has been dominating best-seller lists and filling multiple spots in the top ten lists.  Her book, It Ends With Us, spent most of 2022 in the top spot and is set to be made into a movie starring Blake Lively.  Because of this, Finding Colleen Hoover on our shelves can be a bit of a challenge.

 I found that searching various webpages for Colleen Hoover's read-a-likes can be a bit overwhelming.  At times it seems like each list seems completely different and not all of them are very clear on which aspects make the books similar to Hoover's.   I've started making lists, and more lists, and then marking the lists, trying to highlight which books were mentioned by multiple sources and which books they are thought to be similar to.  

Words used to describe Colleen Hoover's books: heart-wrenching, gripping,  and drama-filled. These books are contemporary romances with darker tones.  Hoover does not shy away from themes of grief, trauma, mental health, and abuse as her characters forge ahead in hopes of finding happiness.

A "Noble" Love Story

One theme found in Romance is  Royalty and Nobility, especially in Regency Romance (British Regency 1811–1820 or early 19th century.  It's amongst these that the trope of "The Rake" seems to frequent. Where female protagonists are often warned to steer clear of a certain Duke or Earl due to rather "unwholesome" reputations.  Another trope that stands out in these romances is a desire to break away from societal expectations, especially concerning marriage; whether it is a  hope to marry for love, rather than a title, or to avoid matrimony altogether.
