It's Cicada Season, although, I'm still waiting to see if any arrive out here, (I have seen evidence of cicada takeovers via Facebook and even met a couple in Countryside IL)   It's also Summer Reading Program season and that has arrived in full force.   The theme this year is "Read, Renew, Repeat." The goal is to spread some Conservation and Ecology awareness. We are offering activities and events with this goal in mind and updates of our events can be found via our Facebook  page or Instagram. This year, the Summer Reading Program is through ReadSquared. Pride is Power

 

Last year, state houses across the country introduced 550 bills that would negatively impact the rights of the LGBTQ+ population and over 80 of them became law. As of May 3rd, the ACLU is tracking 513 anti-LGBTQ bills in the United States.  This year Chicago has chosen "Pride is Power" as the theme for the parade. The first Pride Parade occurred one year after the Stonewall Riots in New York. Activist Craig Schoonmaker has been quoted as saying, “I authored the word ‘pride’ for gay pride…[my] first thought was ‘Gay Power’. I didn’t like that, so proposed gay pride.  There’s very little chance for people in the world to have power. People did not have power then; even now, we only have some. But anyone can have pride in themselves, and that would make them happier as people, and produce the movement likely to produce change.”( https://www.history.com/topics/gay-rights/pride-month). By making “Pride is Power” the theme, the parameters of what gives people power are redefined by giving recognition to the impact people can have when they come together as a group.
