Garage Sales and Thrift Stores, (and clearance aisles), are my happy places; much to my husband's disappointment. I love the deals, the unusual finds, and the feeling that I'm giving things a second chance at life. The act of hosting garage sales, however, is not quite as fun.
On the last day of the millennium, sassy Faith Bass Darling, the richest old lady in Bass, Texas, decides to have a garage sale. With help from a couple of neighborhood boys, Faith lugs her priceless Louis XV elephant clock, countless Tiffany lamps, and everything else from her nineteenth-century mansion out onto her long, sloping lawn.
Why is a recluse of twenty years suddenly selling off her dearest possessions? Becasue God told her to.
As the townspeople grab up five generations of heirlooms, everyone drawn to the sale--including Faith's lon-lost daughter--finds that the antiques not only hold family secrets but also inspire some of life's most imponderable questions: Do our possessions possess us? What are we without our memories? Is there life after death or second chances here on earth? And is Faith really selling that Tiffany lamp for $1?
Meg Langslow decides it is time to take matters into her own hands when she and her husband purchase an old house that comes as is with decades of "collectibles" inside, and her attempts to get rid of the junk by holding a massive garage sale are put on hold when the body of an antiques dealer is found stuffed in a trunk in the barn.
Taking chances is part of life, but when you bet your future against the odds, it's a high-risk game. Kate Madison's stylish resale shop has been a big SoHo success, supporting her and her four kids since her husband's untimely death. Now they are grown and ready to forge lives of their own. And they all choose to play against the odds, to their mother's dismay. Isabelle, a dedicated attorney, is in line to make partner at her Wall Street firm when she falls for a client she represents in a criminal case. She tells herself she can make a life with him—but can she? Julie, a young designer, meets a man who seems too good to be true and falls under his spell. She marries him quickly, gives up her job, and moves to Los Angeles to be at his side—but is all what it seems? Justin is a struggling writer who pushes for children with his partner before they're financially or emotionally ready. Will the strain on the relationship take too high a toll? And Willie, the youngest, a tech expert, makes a choice that shocks them all, with a woman twelve years older. Kate—loving, supportive, and outspoken—can't keep her children from playing against the odds. Can the odds be beaten? Not often—as her children have to learn for themselves. For Kate, the hardest lesson will be that she can't protect the children she loves from the choices they make—but can only love them as they make them.
"Brooklyn Wainwright is thrilled to be appearing on the San Francisco edition of the hit TV show This Old Attic as a rare-book expert and appraiser. Her first subject is a very valuable first-edition copy of the classic children's story The Secret Garden, which is owned by a flower vendor named Vera. Once she hears what her book is worth, Vera is eager to have Brooklyn recondition it for resale. But after the episode airs, a furious man storms onto the set, claiming that Vera found the first edition at his garage sale, and he wants it back--or else. Brooklyn is relieved that she's put The Secret Garden in a safe place, but Randolph Rayburn, the handsome host of This Old Attic, is terrified by the man's threats. He confides in Brooklyn that he fears he is being stalked by the show's former creator and star, who was fired when ratings declined. In the days that follow, several violent incidents occur on the set, and Brooklyn is almost killed, leaving both her and her security expert boyfriend, Derek, shaken. Is someone after Brooklyn and the book? Or has Randolph's stalker become more desperate? And then Brooklyn visits Vera's flower shop ... and discovers her dead. Is the murderer one of the two obvious suspects, or is something more sinister--even bizarre--going on? Brooklyn had better find the clever killer soon or more than her chance at prime time may be canceled ... permanently"-- Back cover.
This book provides valuable insights into successfully mastering the world of these sales. First, how to find and negotiate the best price for objects of value and, second, how to easily resell those same objects on eBay and Amazon for a nice profit. Beginning with a section titled "How to Use This Book," the author instructs his readers on how to maximize their efforts, and how to discern what is worth buying (and, as importantly, what isn't). He also discusses many other very valuable perks to attending garage, yard and estate sales like finding high-end clothes or even just general household items for your own or use which translates into a huge savings of money. This is also a great opportunity to start your own collection of antiques and collectibles which is both fun and an unbelievably good investment.
