A dichotomy between the past and present, the ghosts of one's past stirring up old regrets, fears, and sins, into the present psyche, building tension. A prickle of fear, goosebumps, a whisper of air on the back of the neck, shivers of trepidation caused by the elements of eerie surroundings. A sense of the macabre but nothing tangible, no source that can be pinpointed or grasped, but it's spreading, building up to something. There is tension and anticipation of what's to come. Often Otherworldliness, creatures, and supernatural, are either present or suspected also plays a part.
