January 11th is recognized as National Milk Day to commemorate when milk first arrived on people's doorsteps in glass bottles. In 1878, Alexander Campbell in representation of the New York Dairy Company told the New York State Senate that his company was the first to deliver milk this way. The milk timeline goes as far back as 8000 b.c. with the domestication of cows. In 1796, Dr. Edward Jenner upon realizing that milkmaids seemed to have an immunity to smallpox, made his way into the vaccine history books by using cowpox to innoculate children against smallpox. (https://www.cdc.gov/smallpox/history/history.html). Then came Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) who blessed us with pasteurization. In March of 1883, Dairy farmers in New York butted heads with milk distribution companies who they believed were shortchanging them. When the distribution companies refused to pay the Dairy farmers a high price, the farmers began to sabotage shipments by creating blockades and outright spilling the milk. The New York Milk War came to end in late March of 1883 when a temporary settlement was reached. In 1884, the first glass milk bottles were patented by Dr. Henry Thatcher. https://milk.procon.org/historical-timeline/
Milk! : A 10,000-Year Food Fracas by Kurlansky, Mark
Mother's milk may be the essence of nourishment, but it is the milk of other mammals that humans have cultivated ever since the domestication of animals more than 10,000 years ago. During the nineteenth-century mass production and urbanization made milk safety a leading issue of the day, with milk-borne illnesses a common cause of death. Pasteurization slowly became a legislative matter. Today milk is a test case in the most pressing issues in food politics. Kurlansky traces milk's history from antiquity to the present, detailing its curious and crucial role in cultural evolution, religion, nutrition, politics, and economics.
The number of scientific discoveries by Louis Pasteur is astounding. From his work on fermentation that led to the process of pasteurization to the rabies vaccine, Pasteur made a huge impact on industry, medicine, and scientific theory.

"An intimate memoir on the work and wonder of ranch life, critiquing the inhumane and environmentally destructive factory farm system and offering sustainable alternatives for ethical omnivores. Although there are nearly 100 million cattle in the United States, these animals are often ignored or dismissed. In Meditations with Cows, Shreve Stockton inspires a more reverential attitude toward these affectionate and intelligent creatures as she shares captivating stories and photos of ranch life. At the center of the narrative is Daisy, the matriarch of the herd. Through the daily ritual of milking, Stockton forges a relationship with Daisy that deepens with each passing season: "When you have a milk cow, you are together every day, no matter the weather, no matter either of your moods. The hind leg of this twelve-hundred-pound animal towers over you as you crouch beside her... both of you aware of the fact that one well-aimed kick could kill you if she wished. Yet you are allowed to rest your cheek and forehead against her warm belly as you milk... her trust in you entwined with your trust in her, you become family." For anyone who loves animals or cares about the environmental impact of their food, Stockton explores conservation and the important role of cattle in local ecosystems, models the humane treatment of animals, and shows how pastured cattle can be our allies in averting climate crisis. Blending together narrative, science, and thoughtful reflection, Meditations with Cows offers a moving portrait of the rhythms of work, life, and hardship on the ranch."--Dust jacket.

But then they find the bodies - and the milk bottles. Three seemingly unconnected victims - a hard-working AA patrolman, a would-be Beauty Queen, a catty BBC radio personality - have all been killed with the same, highly unusual murder weapon. Constable Twitten, Sergeant Brunswick and Inspector Steine are initially baffled, the town is alarmed, and the local newspaper is delighted: after all, what sells papers better than a killer on the loose? Can our redoubtable trio solve the case and catch this most curious of killers before they strike again?"--Provided by publisher
