Short Story Month

Although short stories can be traced back to ancient times, It wasn't until the 19th century with The Brothers Grimm and Edgar Allan Poe, that they began to be found regularly in print. Most of Anton Chekhov's  500 short stories were written from 1855 to 1899, earning him the titles of master and founder of the modern short story.  The popularity of the short story only grew with the growth of magazine and newspaper publications; Beeton's Christmas Annual is where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance.

"From the beloved author of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series comes a delightful compendium of very short fiction and comics that celebrate the joy and absurdity of the human experience. It is often said that the best things in life come in small packages--anyone in search of proof need look no further than the stories in this collection: brief, utterly engaging tales that offer lasting surprise and delight. From the original Greek financial crisis, when the profligate Gods of Olympus were punished by Odin and the other Norse Gods for their unchecked spending, to a handy unintended benefit of cosmetic surgery; from Pope Ron, the first Australian Pope, who wants nothing more than to live quietly, to a rather droll cat named Stanley, to Good President Wenceslas, benevolent leader of a snowy land: these stories are by turns funny, poignant, and deliciously wicked, each one a gift begging to be unwrapped and enjoyed again and again"--. "Do you dare read this collection of terrifyingly gruesome tales? In this gripping volume, author Jen Campbell offers young readers an edgy, contemporary, and inclusive take on classic fairy tales, taking them back to their gory beginnings while updating them for a modern audience with queer and disabled characters and positive representation of disfigurement"--Publisher's description.

Presents a complete collection of the author's short stories, some of which were not previously published, featuring such characters as a boy who decides to become a writer to impress the rich girl he has fallen in love with and an architect with plans for an impregnable library.

"Love and marriage. Children and family. Death and grief. Life touches everyone the same. But living under lockdown, it changes us alone. In these ten beautifully moving short stories written mostly over the last year, Roddy Doyle paints a collective portrait of our strange times. A man abroad wanders the streets, as news of the virus at home asks him to question his next move. An exhausted nurse struggles to let go, having lost a much-loved patient in isolation. A middle-aged son, barred from his mother's funeral, wakes to an oncoming hangover of regret. Life Without Children cuts to the heart of how we are all navigating loss, loneliness, and the shifting of history underneath our feet"--. Adapted from dust jacket flap.

"The Heralds of Valdemar are the kingdom's ancient order of protectors. They are drawn from all across the land, from all walks of life, and at all ages--and all are Gifted with abilities beyond those of normal men and women. They are Mindspeakers, FarSeers, Empaths, ForeSeers, Firestarters, FarSpeakers, and more. These inborn talents--combined with training as emissaries, spies, judges, diplomats, scouts, counselors, warriors, and more--make them indispensable to their monarch and realm. Sought and Chosen by mysterious horse-like Companions, they are bonded for life to these telepathic, enigmatic creatures. The Heralds of Valdemar and their Companions ride circuit throughout the kingdom, protecting the peace and, when necessary, defending their land and monarch. Now, nineteen authors ride with Mercedes Lackey to her magical land of Valdemar, adding their own unique voices to the Heralds, Bards, Healers, and other heroes of this beloved fantasy realm." -- Page [4] of cover.

A dark, thrilling short-story collection about twisted minds and vengeful hearts, from a true master of suspense. Readers will swoon for this collection of stories that celebrate love at its most humorous, inclusive, heart-expanding, and serendipitous." Publisher's description.

"Short, bald, and bespectacled, Frank Rule is not a typical Llano Estacado cowboy. While moving his family out of the Rio Grande Valley, an area tormented by Comancheros and bands of renegade Indians, disaster befalls the Rule family. Forced to live alone in the isolation of the Texas Panhandle, eventually Frank falls into periods of hallucination, where he is visited by the spirit of his dead wife at night and the devil during the day. Despite these struggles, he develops a reputation for solving mysteries and avenging wrongs. Now all Frank has to do is get control of his own life. The adventures of this 1860s paladin are often intriguing, sometimes frightening, and they open a window to the past on a harsh frontier."--Jacket flap.

An anthology of stories in various genres, each featuring disabled characters and written by disabled creators. The collection includes stories of interstellar war, a journey to Persia, a dating debacle. The teenaged characters reflect diverse colors, genders, and orientations-- without obscuring the realities of their disabilities. -- adapted from jacket
